One Who Came Back: The Diary of a Jewish Survivor Overview

Josef Katz was 23 years old when the Nazis deported him from his home in Lübeck, Germany, to the Riga ghetto in 1941. Over the next four years he experienced unrelenting brutality in internment ghettos and concentration camps. One Who Came Back is his account of the daily terror in Riga, Kaiserwald, Stutthof, numbers of smaller labor camps, and a final death march in Germany: "Every incident, every experience, every horror is exactly as it occurred." Katz began this diary soon after his liberation, finishing it in New York where he arrived with his wife Irene, also a survivor of Riga, in 1946. The diary remained in a drawer until the mid-1970s when his daughter brought it to the attention of her German Professor. The Herzl Press published the book in collaboration with the Bergen-Belsen Memorial Press. This new edition revises Hilda Reach's translation, adds a map, and includes an introduction by Herman Taube, the author of Looking Back, Going Forward: New & Selected Poems .
